Sex before marriage

I thought I would take the conversation about sex into a new blog post.

CNN just did a recent survey that says 95% of people have had sex before they were married.

Quote: "More than nine out of 10 Americans, men and women alike, have had premarital sex, according to a new study. The high rates extend even to women born in the 1940s, challenging perceptions that people were more chaste in the past."

It seems even christians and people born in the 1940's aren't listening to the churches (websites re: logic) that talk about how premarital sex is wrong. Unless the 5% is made up of only christians and perhaps other faiths. Still if you combine all the faiths that would say sex if for marriage only I think that would be a far higher percentage than 5.

And for zuzu's question about why sex before marriage is wrong. Here's a couple websites that talk about it and are similar to what I've heard all my life.

I know that for all the video series, youth group talks, and websites I've read like this I am not so sure they help anyone come to an understanding of sexuality and God's heart for us. Probably because they are judgment based. But of course I have no clue what I think right now. Although I am in the 5%. . .

Just to state the obvious though. The reason this is important for me to figure out is because let's say hypothetically I am gay, and a christian. . . then if I am in a relationship I can't be married. So therefore premarital sex is really my only option. . . even if it's in a monogamous partnership. So I need to figure out what I think of it. And frankly I still am not sure.

Although lately I have found Lauren Winner's thoughts more able than most christian authors to be BOTH spacious AND biblical. Still I haven't found any authors of any stripe that are able to say something that makes a difference in my life concerning this. I may be in the 5% but I still think the church is unable to deal with this in a way that impacts anyone's lives.

OMG.. I just had to stop about 3/4 of the way through the probe.org arguments.. it's all so erroneous. I love how he writes about how some tribe embracing cannabalsm 100% doesn't make it "right"... but then doesn't present a single cogent argument about sex and sexuality... the only argument you're left with, basically, is "because Christian's say so." If STD's are essentially God's "curse" for premarital sex, then accordingly, any kind of sex, premarital or other, among women must be approved and actually ordained by God. Lesbian's have one of the lowest STD rates as a group. The argument all starts out nonsequitar like when the author's initial arguments goes down a path of a woman having sex "outside of her marriage" when he husband is an alcholic vegetable. Well, certainly, I actually do believe sex outside a committed, monogamous relationship is immoral... I mean, if you've told your partner, before your community and before your God, that you are committed, monogamous and until death do you part. Well, then it's a lie if you step out on your partner. But that has nothing to do with having sex with a lover, a partner, that you are committed to and yet not married to. Talking about premarial sex like hamburger and marital sex as fillet mignon is abit disengenuous. I know of plenty of married people whose sex life sucks... who don't have sex and/or who have very bad sex, but not outside their marriage.. all within their marriage. Yippeee... no fillet mignon on their sexual plate. Marriage doesn't .. ooops.. i gotta go.. an emergency has arisen... - Zu!
